How to add text in Photoshop

Need to add text to your Photoshop project?

Photoshop is ideal for many types of projects, and most of them include text. So how do you add text to your project?

This short tutorial covers the basics of single-line text and text blocks, both of which are useful for a wide range of project types.

When adding text to your Photoshop design, consider single lines of text for titles and shorter sentences and blocks of text for sections of text and longer paragraphs.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop
  2. Select the Type tool on the left toolbar (shortcut = T).
  3. You can add a single line of text by clicking once anywhere on the project canvas. This is ideal for short sentences or titles.
  4. You can add a text box by clicking and dragging with the Text tool. This is ideal for paragraphs, as it causes the text inside the box to «wrap» (the wrapped text goes down one line once it reaches the edge of the box).

How to do this is explained in more detail below:

Step 1: Select the text tool on the left toolbar (shortcut = T).

After opening Adobe Photoshop CC, select the Horizontal Type Tool. This can be easily found on the toolbar by looking for the «T» icon. There is also a keyboard shortcut you can use. Simply press «T» on your keyboard.

Step 2: Click on any part of the canvas

Once you have selected the Horizontal Type Tool, simply click once anywhere on the canvas to start creating new text. Doing so will automatically create a new text layer in the Layers panel.

These new text layers will be used when you want to keep track of the edits or text you have added or when you want to add new layers.

If you see that words like «Lorem Ipsum» appear in the text box where the new text should be, simply delete them and replace them with the desired words. These words are considered placeholders, and the function can be disabled if you find them too distracting.

Step 3: Type the required text

Once you have clicked on your canvas, you can start typing the desired text inside the text box. Since you are using the horizontal writing tool, you can continue writing a horizontal line to infinity.

While this is great news, as you will never run out of space to write new text, it can be quite difficult to fit it all into one image. However, you can press the «Enter» key to start a new line of text.

Step 4: Save the text

Once you have finished typing and are satisfied with what you have in the text box, simply press the ESC key to save your changes. You can also simply click on the «check mark» that appears in the top settings bar.

Change text color

There are two ways to do this; the first is to double-click on the text. The next step is to press Control + A (Windows) or Command + A (Mac). This will highlight all the text.

If you want to change the color of a specific letter or just a specific section of text, simply drag the mouse over it to highlight that area.

Then click on Color Fill in the top settings bar. A color selector will appear where you can choose the color of your choice. Once you are finished, simply click OK to save your changes.

Adjust the font size of the text

There are two ways to do this: directly or with the Move Tool. If you prefer to do this directly, simply open the Character Panel.

You can also do this by going to Window > Character. Choose the desired font from the drop-down menu that appears. You can also type the font size you want.

The other option is to use the Move Tool. You can access it by pressing V and selecting the text layer. Once you have done this, click on any of the corners of the transformation box around your text.

To increase the font size, simply drag the font outwards and vice versa.
